2008 meme.

Majel Barrett died. I forgot to say. Probably you knew.
This is a meme I stole from
chiasmata.
Did you enjoy this year?
Um. Actually it's been really mixy. It was really mixy even before my grandfather died. I saw Leonard Cohen in concert twice, and if you'd told me in January that was going to happen I'd have ... well. I'd have said 'No, it won't', basically. I'm very glad it did happen because it's sort of made it impossible for this year to sink below a certain level of acceptability. I also saw Kris Kristoffersen in concert and I went to Lancaster and I saw Humph in the ISIHAC stage show a month before he died. Humph's dying was a massive downer, obv. And then I met my brother's appalling fiancee and collected a lot of rejection letters and last week wasn't very ace. But I don't know. I enjoyed bits of it very much indeed.
What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
I saw Leonard Cohen in concert twice.
Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Though I'm sure I recall doing this meme last year, I can't find it and I can't remember what resolutions I made, which suggests I didn't do them. I think I resolved always to have a book on the go, and then I sort of stopped reading in September. I did write rather more than I did in 2007 though. Next year I'm going to resolve to learn some proper chords on the mandolin and be a bit less of a knob in general.
Did anyone close to you give birth?
No. No-one's done that since 1996. It's not a think my acquaintances go in for.
Did anyone close to you die?
Yes. Just sneaking it in at the close of the year there.
What countries did you visit?
I haven't left the country since 2004.
What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
A production.
What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The date that's sticking in my mind at present is the 23rd of May, which was the birthday of both Humphrey Lyttelton and my grandfather.
What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Oh, I don't like that question at all. I finished two plays, but they're not really much of an achievement.
What was your biggest failure?
It's represented by the epic pile of rejection letters on my desk.
Did you suffer illness or injury?
Had some fairly weird innards to be sure.
Did you have to go to the hospital?
Yes, but as a visitor rather than a patient.
Are you registered to vote?
Course.
What was the best thing you bought?
Leonard Cohen tickets.
Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Don't know. Desmond Tutu as a rule.
Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The fiancee's behaviour continually appalls me, but it doesn't exactly depress me. It just makes me feel JUSTIFIED.
Where did most of your money go?
Leonard Cohen. Well, food.
What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Leonard Cohen. Definitely.
What song will always remind you of 2008?
I hate to say 'Hallejulah', but it is. Nothing to do with the faffing X-Factor. More to do with the whole having seen Leonard Cohen thing I had going on.
Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. Happier or sadder?
I don't know. I just feel harmlessly bland today.
ii. richer or poorer?
Poorer.
What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing.
What do you wish you'd done less of?
Using corrosive mouthwashes.
How will you be spending Christmas?
Wishing we had the guts to leave the presents unwrapped. They look so much prettier that way.
Where did you ring in 2008?
In bed. I loathe the whole new year thing.
What was your favourite TV programme?
Does this mean my all time favourite? Probably it means specific to this past year. Whose Line is it Anyway? probably. Also Lost had a surprisingly good season. Ooh! It's coming back soon. Goodo.
Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No new people. Just, you know. More intensely.
What was the best book you read?
I did very poorly at reading this year. I liked Catherine Fisher's new novel - Sapphique.
What was your greatest musical discovery?
I discovered the other day that my chronically out-of-tune fiddle had magically righted itself under my bed. That was exciting.
What did you want and get?
Leonard ... you know the rest.
What did you want and not get?
A production. I said this already. Cherie to win the dancing. Ken Doherty on the telly for five fecking minutes.
Were you in school (any time this year)?
No. I'm a grown up.
How did you earn your keep?
Intermittently.
What was your favourite film of this year?
Half of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Probably There Will Be Blood on balance. I didn't see very many films this year and most of them were fairly meh.
What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I went to Lancaster! And played Escape from Atlantis. I was 28.
What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A pro-duc-tion. Listen.
How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
I wouldn't. Even if I had one I wouldn't describe it. It sounds tittish.
What kept you sane?
Electrodes.
What political issue stirred you the most?
Well ... Zimbabwe was fairly narking. I think in this case it's probably fair to call an entire country a political issue. The US elections made me feel jaded.
Who was the best new person you met?
I'm not particularly recalling meeting new people in person this year. There were new people on my flist and obviously that's always very lovely.
Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008:
No. Because this isn't actually He-Man.
Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
You can't pass heat from the cooler to the hotter. You can try it if you like, but you'd far better not-a. I don't know.
