There are a couple of versions of Hallelujah floating around - primarily, there's the one on the album Various Positions, which is ostensibly a conversation between the singer and a critic about music, and there's the live version, which covers the same basic theme (the worth of imperfection, which crops up again and again in Cohen's music) but is focused on a failed relationship. I've come across cover versions that mix the two of them, which I think is rather a misguided thing to do myself, but there you go. I think the recorded version is the best.
Hurrah for varied ways of having fun with music, that's what I say.
