I've been priding myself on my magnificent reserve of late when it comes to the question of whether or not I ought to buy an almond croissant. The answer is invariably no, because I've gone a bit ultra-frugal. Which means not buying almond croissants. It's the most disgustingly middle-class version of frugality you can possibly imagine, but you knew I wasn't going to say 'choosing which of my children to feed'. And there are upsides to not being able to afford the odd almond croissants. It means, for start, that I'm not in danger of overdosing on almond croissants. I can't pretend I wasn't in the past.

Then I get home and find my mother's bought me a maple-pecan plait.

You know Captain Darling? He's great. I hadn't noticed before. I don't really mean Captain Darling ... I more sort of mean that in watching I've noticed how much Tim McInnerny's performance stands out above everyone else's in that series, and everyone else isn't half bad either. None of this means I've changed my mind about that poll. The Blackadder's still number one. The other person whose acting talents I'm currently massively impressed by is Graham Moffat. Britmovie calls him 'not much of an actor', but Britmovie's basically using the words 'not much of an' where they mean to use 'expert comic'. AGAIN. He was seventeen when he filmed Oh, Mr Porter. I don't think they make seventeen year olds these days with that sort of deadpan timing.

Also I love Mrs Banks. In Mary Poppins. Very much indeed. Yonmei said this:

'Really, this film should be about a romance between Bert and Mr Banks while Mrs Banks runs off to be a feminist.'

That's right, that is.
