Gutted fish on a washing line (greyscaled, then with the colour put back into the line and pegs, for larks). The upsetting thing is that I've also seen clothes on this line.

Ooh, this is really good. How do you put the colour back in to certain bits after you've greyscaled it? That's a rather neat little trick.

Photobucket has a tool called 'color splash' in the edit mode - it greyscales the picture and then it gives you a cursor, and whatever you highlight with that is restored to colour. Quite good fun. I expect most proper photo-editing stuff has a similar tool.

The easiest way to do it in GIMP (as far as I can tell):

1) Duplicate the layer and add an alpha channel if there i'n't one
2) Select the top layer and pull down the saturation slider in the "Adjust Hue / Lightness / Saturation" dialog box dude
3) Select the eraser tool and choose what size brush etc you want
4) As you drag the eraser around the image it will make the top layer completely transparent, thus allowing the colour of the lower layer to show through
