'The bicycle,' says Dr Pierce, 'is being used by people of all ages and conditions of health in daily life; its hygenic value as a means to healthy exercise cannot be overestimated.'

I love his use of the word 'hygenic'. But anyway, he's right. I've just cycled again for the first time in at least two years, and it was Great, with a whacking big capital G and italics and everything. And while, if you don't actually forget to ride a bicycle, you do find it a tad tall and wobbly for the first mile, you quickly settle back into it. And then you go fast! And cover vastish distances much quicker than you would on foot. And going downhill...it's my absolute favourite thing in the whole world, is going downhill on a bicycle, and I did it lots. Big steep hills where pulling the brakes hurts your fingers no end but doesn't actually slow the bike down. It was triffic. I nearly whooped for joy. Now I have 10 quick miles' worth of adrenaline within me. I ought to use it for something productive.

Also, we stopped for ice-lollies on the way back. There's nothing like leaning against the wall of the village shop, sandwiched between two bikes - a chapel, of all things, at the bottom of the street - watching a dusty ginger tomcat cross the road and waiting for your friend to return with ice-lollies to make you feel 15 years old.
